Review by Francisco Baquerizo-Racines, Metropolis M

In ‘Aan een onbekende, die ik onvoorwaardelijk liefheb’ (To a stranger, whom I love unconditionally) Janneke Venema explores the rhythm of inner time and flow and searches for alternative narratives for a more human, cyclical, and embodied experience of temporality. She presents a collection of letters written to future generations, offering a layered research on the philosophy of time. The letters are accompanied by an installation of wood, as trees play an important role in Venema’s work about the concept of time. Their ancient wisdom and extensive lifespans that oftentimes cover multiple human generations inspire her to slow down and consider the long term in everyday life. She only uses waste wood she finds in or near the city of Utrecht, as a way to advocate for circular and respectful use of materials.
