Circular stories
Exhibition ‘Manuals and Mess’
Academie Galerij Utrecht
December 2024
According to ancient Celtic and Germanic cultures, life unfolds in a natural rhythm of birth, growth, decay, rest, and rebirth. This circular dynamic is interwoven in the seasons that follow each other every year and in the life cycle of plants, humans, and animals. Even in internal processes such as the menstrual cycle, this circular dynamic can be found. In the modern Western world, it seems as if we only have eyes for the phase of growth, stuck in eternal springitme. We always want more, faster, better, richer, but we are slowly reaching the limits of what the planet can sustain. What can it bring us if we also learn to accept the other phases of life, those of decay and rest? If we occasionally pause and reflect before initiating a new movement?
Circular Stories represents the seasons of autumn and winter, according to the Celts and Germanic peoples the phase of decline, reflection and saying goodbye. Under 3-meter-high giant hogweed plants that have finished flowering, the public can read stories about forgotten Celtic and Germanic knowlegde. In the middle is a mirror, like a pond, which, with inscribed leaves that represent Jannekes family tree.
